Fatigue at Notches and the Local Strain and Fracture Mechanics Approaches

Source

Total fatigue lives of notched members are considered to be divided into initiation and propagation phases. Notch size effects caused by crack propagation are accounted for automatically if initiation is defined as a crack size within the local notch stress field. The extent of this field may he estimated from fracture mechanics analysis, with its size being on the order of one tenth of the notch radius. Plasticity effects must be handled properly in predicting crack initiation, but linear elastic analysis is generally satisfactory for handling the propagation phase.
