Empirical Strength Theories

The formulation of empirical strength criteria is considered and some general principles that should be satisfied by all strength criteria are discussed. The available strength criteria for isotropic materials, with unequal strengths in tension and compression, are discussed in the light of the general principles. Some recent criteria for anisotropic materials are also presented. Contributions from the Russian literature are extensively referenced.
