Determination of Degradation of Nylon 66 Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry

An analytical technique which will detect degradation in nylon 66 has been developed. This is accomplished by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The technique makes use of the double melting point phenomena to determine various degrees of degradation. This method requires a very small sample size (4 mg) and can be completed within 2 h. A discussion of other techniques and the disadvantages of each is also given. Finally, a relationship between the analytical technique and the physical properties of nylon 66 is presented.
