Special Requirements for Testing Auger-Placed Grout Piles


Experience in testing auger-placed grout piles using ASTM Testing Piles Under Axial Compressive Load (D 1143) indicates that modification of the testing methods for this type of pile can improve interpretation of test data and provide greater confidence in the test results. Much of the load testing specified for auger-placed piles is intended to evaluate soil-pile interaction as with driven piles. Other load testing is often specified for auger-placed piles mainly to ensure continuity of the piles. This paper compares pile test procedures and results in a number of auger-placed pile installations and recommends modifications to the testing methods to take the special nature of these piles into account.
