Effect of Impurity Concentration on the Change in Fracture Toughness of AISI Type 403 Stainless Steel with Fast Neutron Radiation

Source

We have measured the changes in fracture toughness (KIC) and Charpy V-notch characteristics of low impurity and high impurity heats of AISI Type 403 stainless steel with neutron radiation at 575 K. The change in 50 percent shearfracture temperature was agood approximation to the temperature change in the curve of fracture toughness versus temperature.

Arguments are presented for simulating the elastic fracture characteristics of irradiated ferritic steels by lowering the test temperature of unirradiated components. For air-melted AISI Type 403 stainless steel, this temperature difference varied from 35 to 95 K.
