Progress in Fracture Testing of Metallic Materials

Source

Progress in the development of fracture-toughness testing techniques by ASTM Committee E-24 is reviewed briefly. The evolution of the test method for plane strain stress-intensity factor, KIc, is described, including treatment of some of the problems dealing with fatigue cracking, thickness limitations and crack growth detection, and measurement. Attention is given also to the preparation of the screening test method for thin sections. Some cautions are presented concerning the necessity for meticulous standardization, despite the time required to do an acceptable job, and the timing problems in incorporating methods into specification requirements.
