Vascular Prostheses: Innovative Properties

Source

Findings resulting from electro-chemical and biophysical studies of the vascular tree are correlated with the development of modern vascular prostheses, many of biologic origin. Multiple studies indicate that thrombosis in the vascular tree of mammalia obeys fundamental electrochemical laws. Experiments further reveal that electron giving and taking at 0 mV with respect to the normal hydrogen electrode via intermediate metabolism relates directly to platelet depositing and the incitement of thrombosis. This information permits a logical approach to the development of modern prosthetic grafts. The resulting vascular grafts—umbilical vein, modified mature collagen, and others—are described. The functional results following long-term implantation are summarized.
