A Concise Feature Set for the Pattern Recognition of Low-Temperature Luminescence Spectra of Hazardous Chemicals


As computer libraries of corrected, digitized, low-temperature luminescence, and fluorescence spectra are expanded, it becomes increasingly important to specify a succinct and pithy set of features that will accelerate the library search for a matched spectrum to an unknown sample spectrum. While feature sets for other types of spectra have been investigated extensively, feature sets for fluorescence and luminescence spectra have not been fully explored as yet. Using a specially generated library of lowtemperature luminescence spectra of approximately 60 hazardous chemicals, a feature set consisting of only six components (the first four noncentral sample moments of the spectrum, the approximate normalized area under the spectral envelope, and the wavelength corresponding to the location of the maximum intensity) performs exceptionally well in a test using a cluster analysis involving over 2000 pairwise comparisons of the feature sets.
