Hazardous Waste Landfill Research

The hazardous waste land disposal research program is collecting data necessary to support implementation of disposal guidelines mandated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) (PL 94-580). This program, relating to the categorical areas of landfills, surface impoundments, and underground mines, encompasses state-of-the-art documents, laboratory analysis, economic assessment, bench and pilot studies, and full-scale field verification studies. Over the next five years the research will be reported as technical resource documents (TRDs) in support of the Permit Writers Guidance Manuals. These manuals will be used to provide guidance for conducting the review and evaluation of land disposal permit applications. This paper presents an overview of this program and reports the current status of work in the various categorical areas.
