The Origin and Present Status of the IPTS-68

Source

Those of you who are familiar with the early plans for this Symposium know that Cecil Barber was to have presented the opening address. My great regret at having to substitute for him, because of his death from a heart attack three months ago, is, I know, shared by his colleagues from many countries. These colleagues had, without deliberation but with near unanimity, regarded Barber as the dean of the temperature measurement field. This is not the occasion to describe his accomplishments, though this would be easy to do; I will, however, point out that it was a typical attribute of this unofficial position that Barber held that resulted in his being the automatic choice for chairman of the small group that, during 1967 and '68, had the task of converting a very rough and inadequate outline of a temperature scale into the current official scale—the International Practical Temperature Scale of 1968.
