A Radio Frequency Warning Device for Early Roof Failure Detection

Source

A radio frequency roof failure warning device has been designed by the Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center, that can be easily installed in a standard rockbolt hole drilled into a mine roof or rib. The device will monitor deformation of the exposed rock surface with respect to an anchor installed in the rock at any reasonable depth. It provides surveillance for falling rock and, with modification, will measure rock movement as a function of time. The device is inexpensive, coal mine permissible, and of nonobstructing nature when installed, thereby lessening interference with mining operations. A warning signal is transmitted to a radio receiver in the immediate area when the deformation limit (adjustable from 0 to 212 in.) is reached. Total cost for the roof failure sensor is expected to be less than $50 in large quantities and any standard radio receiver can be used. A small inexpensive personal receiver can be developed for mine personnel to use when working in the immediate area.
