Drop-Weight Tear Test—Effect of Variables on Test Results

Source

Variables studied in this evaluation of the Battelle type drop-weight tear test (DWTT) include operator, test machine, specimen thickness, notch type, and strength level of the material tested. Operator and machine variations were found to be small. For a given material, increasing the specimen thickness raises the plateau energy and the transition temperature. Energy at a given percent shear is proportional to thickness. Notches examined include pressed notch, machined notch, fatigue crack, and crack starter weld. Continued use of the pressed notch is recommended. A side grooved DWTT specimen is used to compare the toughness of heat affected zones of welded specimens to that of the base metal. Work in this area is continuing.
