Aluminaut — Three Years Later

Source

The Aluminaut used aluminum alloy 7079 forgings, although this alloy is not particularly corrosion resistant. Corrosion control utilized a combination of protective coating and cathodic protection. The coating used was a four-coat polyurethane system applied over metal that was sandblasted and given a chromate conversion coating. Cathodic protection was obtained from the use of aluminum alloy 606 anodes. The exo-structure is free flooding and made of light gage 5083 alloy. Several areas of this noncritical structure have been bared, without corrosion occurring; indeed, so successful has the anode system been that all additional metal, such as light booms and camera mounts, are being left bare.
