Difference in Triaxial and Plain Strain Shear Strength

The considerable number of physical values influencing failure behavior by simplifications is restricted to six. Shear stress and strain of different regular composed ball packings under plane strain and triaxial conditions have been investigated in theory and experiment. Glass and steel balls with a constant diameter have been used. Plane strain state leads to higher shear strength than triaxial strain state, both in theory and experiment. Influence of porosity and kind of packing is considerable. Absolute values of test results, however, are lower than theoretical ones. Several reasons may be responsible for this difference.
