Buckling of Composite Cylinders Under Combined Compression and Torsion—Theoretical/Experimental Correlation

Source

Elastic buckling loads for laminated composite circular cylindrical shells subject to combined compression and torsion are determined experimentally. Test specimens include both boron/epoxy and graphite/epoxy laminates with symmetric layups of [∓45]s, [−452/452]s, and [0/±45/90]s, and with the unsymmetric layup of [−82.5/30/20/−82.5]. Results are presented on dimensionless buckling interaction diagrams on which the compression load ratios versus torsional load ratios at buckling are plotted. Theoretically predicted buckling loads for the test specimens obtained from a computer program based on Flügge's cylindrical shell buckling equations are also plotted on the interaction diagrams. Good comparison between experiment and theory is achieved when the results are plotted on the interaction diagrams.
