Mechanical Characterization of PMR-15 Graphite/Polyimide Bolted Joints


Design-allowable data characterizing the static strength and viscoelastic performance of PMR-15/Celion 6000 graphite/polyimide composite bolted joints are presented. Two laminate configurations in the [0i/±45j/90k]ns family, one-fiber-dominated and one matrix-dominated, were studied. Temperature-dependent strength characteristics were measured over the 21 to 315°C temperature range for several joint geometries. Effects of strain rate on strength and failure mode behavior were assessed at room temperature for rates ranging between 0.002 and 1.00 s−1. Creep behavior was examined for the case of bearing deformations at temperatures of 21 and 177°C. Ultrasonic inspection techniques were used to assure material integrity and to verify post test damage and failure mode.
