Sampling Faced Foam Insulation Board for Heat Flow Meter Thermal Performance Testing


A practical method is proposed for sampling large-dimension faced rigid foam plastic thermal insulation board in order to obtain a representative number of smaller-dimension test specimens for reproducibly measuring the board's thermal performance properties in conventional heat flow meter equipment. Using a statistical approach, six-specimen traverse sampling is shown to significantly reduce the required number of test specimens without inordinately increasing measurement error risk. Data are also provided which characterize the long-term protective benefits of aluminum foil facers in maintaining good thermal performance capability (aged k-factor).
