Interpretation of Building Thermograms

The thermographic inspection of buildings is normally carried out to characterize the thermal performance of the cladding, to identify and characterize thermal anomalies, or to characterize the surface temperature uniformity.

The paper discusses the requirements of each of these three objectives of a thermographic building survey. It stresses the importance of estimating the overall thermal performance as a prerequisite to examining the anomalies and the nonuniformities and gives the development and application of the dimensionless parameter, the “temperature index” or “TI.”

Typical thermograms of single family dwellings are analyzed.
