Excavation and Soldier Pile-Tremie Concrete (SPTC) Wall Instrumentation and Monitoring Program


The rationale and objectives of an instrumentation and construction monitoring program for a 30 to 50-ft-deep excavation are presented. The excavation was supported by a soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) wall with auger-cast, soil-supported tiebacks. The instrumentation included slope indicators, dial gages, and load cells. The monitoring program included surveying horizontal and vertical movements, monitoring cracks and water levels, and reading the instrumentation. The accuracy of the readings are evaluated. It is concluded that backup systems and methods to cross-check data are required for a successful program. In addition, it is suggested that field calibration checks on the instrumentation be employed.
