Tensile Behavior of Bead Filled Composites


The tensile behavior of styrene acrylonitrile composites filled with glass beads is investigated from room temperature to 30 deg above the glass transition temperature. A linearizing transformation is developed for stress relaxation data taken above the glass transition temperature, and a technique is presented which permits shifting of stress-strain curves so that a master curve independent of filler content is formed. In the glassy region, annealing alters the shape of the stress-strain curve, although the yield stress of these systems is unaffected. A model is presented to account for the effect of filler content on yield stress below Tg, and an equation is developed which shows the functional relationship between yield stress, filler content, strain rate, and temperature.
