A Finite Element Analysis for Stress Distribution in Gripped Tubular Specimens

Source

A new elastic finite element program is implemented. The analysis can account for general anisotropy and the three-dimensional nature of axisymmetric composite bodies. Attention is directed to characterizing the anomalous stress distributions which can occur in certain anisotropic tube specimens. For axial- and hoop- wrapped tubes accurate principal properties data can be obtained using classical shell theory and assuming uniform stress at the midlength cross section of the tube. For helically laminated tubes, the degree of accuracy is highly influenced by the geometry. A substantial inaccuracy could occur in strength predictions even for what normally are considered thin tubes. The study also identifies the stress distribution, including interlaminar effects, under the gripped area, which is not possible with any known closed form solutions.
