Testing Plastics for Performance: Meeting the Challenge of the Future

Source

Previous papers have analyzed the problems of testing viscoelastic materials for end-use performance, summarized the current state of the art, and suggested various approaches to improving our rate of progress. One proposition on which all agree, there is a great deal of work to do that is challenging both technically and logistically. One of the principal areas of challenge one whose solution would have far reaching benefits, is also one for which the American Society for Testing and Materials Committee D-20 (ASTM) is uniquely positioned to attack. This is the interface between viscoelastic material science and the technology of analytical design. More than any other single factor, the inherent interdisciplinary nature of plastics design has frustrated the development and promulgation of a complete and coherent performance testing system. A program and organization whereby D-20 can meet this challenge will be outlined.
