Status of High-Rise Building Sealants in the U.S.

Source

Polysulfide sealants were the only elastomeric sealants available for the modern curtainwall beginning in the early 1950's. They had rapid growth until the early 60's with sales of 3 million kgs., when solvent acrylic, urethane, and silicone sealants were introduced and broke the monopoly of polysulfides. By 1975 the above four sealants had sales in the range of 3 to 4.5 million kgs. By 1988 silicone sales were 10 million kgs followed by urethane with 6 million kgs. Polysulfide and solvent acrylic sealants totaled 3 million kgs. Butyl sealants and acrylic latex sealants are not really competitive with the above.
