Sealant Back-up Material and New Developments


During polyolefin extrusion trials in the first quarter of 1988, we were experimenting with polyolefin blends trying to develop a high resilient backing material which was suitable for use in a joint with slow curing, low modulus, self-leveling sealants. One of the requirements for this new backing material was better compression recovery than traditional closed cell polyethylene foams.

While working with polyolefin blends to increase recovery, it was discovered that a dimensionally stable, open cell/closed cell structure could be extruded with the added benefit of non-outgassing when ruptured.
