The Influence of Heat Ageing on One-Part Construction Silicone Sealants

Source

The paper studies the effects of heat ageing on the elongation at break and tensile strength of 10 commercially available, standard construction silicone sealants, based on acetoxy, alkoxy, aminoxy and oxime cure. Mechanical properties are measured on ISO 8339 tensile test joints after exposure to 100, 150, 180 and 200 °C as well as room temperature (as a control) over a period of 1, 3 and 6 months. The study shows that the heat stability of those one-part silicone sealants investigated is influenced mainly by their cure chemistry and only to a lesser extent by their formulation. A relative ranking of the heat stability of the sealants is derived based on the percentage change of their mechanical properties.
