Tests to Evaluate the Suitability of Materials for Oxygen Service

Source

The use of organic materials in oxygen plants results in a higher risk of fire hazards caused by the higher flammability of these materials. This paper describes the test methods, which have been developed by Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) during the last 30 years to evaluate the safety of different types of materials. A description of the following tests is given: (1) determination of the ignition temperature in gaseous oxygen, (2) test on aging resistance in gaseous oxygen, (3) test on reactivity by adiabatic compression of gaseous oxygen, (4) test on mechanical impact sensitivity in liquid oxygen, and (5) test of burning of flat gaskets rings in gaseous oxygen.
