Calibrating Light Imaging and Light Scattering Probes for Atomizer Spray Characterization


A laser light imaging probe (PMS OAP-260X) and a light scattering probe (PMS FSSP-100) were used to measure droplet size and frequency from atomizers used in aerial spraying. The tests were done at full scale in an aspirated flow wind tunnel, on a temporal basis. We are interested in knowing information of cumulative volume fraction vs droplet size. Methods and results are presented for calibrating the light scattering instrument for droplet size, refractive index, and sample cross-section. Calibration of the light imaging probe is discussed also. The problems of temporal and spatial coincidence are addressed. Results show that a properly calibrated FSSP-100 instrument can be used as a basis for volume flow rate of droplets in the small end of the spectrum. The OAP-260X probe data can then be spliced onto the FSSP-100 spectrum using a mass balance criterion. This is necessary when droplet frequency exceeds the instrument's (OAP-260X) response capability. The calibration technique is illustrated using results from tests on commercial atomizers such as the AU4000 rotary atomizer.
