The Role of the U.S. Coast Guard Strike Team in Hazardous Chemical Responses

This paper discusses the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team, covering the general organization, capabilities, and inventory of response equipment and instrumentation. Because the Atlantic Strike Team has become increasingly involved in federal hazardous waste site activities, the paper focuses on chemical response. In the course of such a response, team members must continually evaluate site hazards and thereby play an active role in the determination of adequate personnel protection equipment. The paper discusses procedures used at the Atlantic Strike Team for making these determinations, as well as identifying those resources available to assist in both level of protection and protective suit material selection decision logic.
