Permeation of Polymeric Materials by Chemicals: A Comparison of 25-mm and 51-mm ASTM Cells

Source

Chemical permeation measurements were made for six chemical/polymer systems using the 51-mm (2-in.) ASTM cell and the smaller version of the cell (25 mm [1 in.]), and the results were compared. An open loop system with gas flow rates of 1000 mL/min (33.8 fl oz/min) (ASTM cell) and 250 mL/min (8.45 fl oz/min) [25 mm (1 in.) cell] was used to determine the breakthrough times and steady-state permeation rates. For each material/chemical pair, at least four experiments were conducted in each cell. The 25-mm (1-in.) cell, compared with the ASTM cell, showed a longer breakthrough time and a lower permeation rate. However, statistical treatment of the results demonstrated that the variation of break-through times and permeation rates between the two cells was insignificant and that the two cells were equivalent.
