Inclusion Assessment in Steel Using the New Jernkontoret Inclusion Chart II for Quantitative Measurements

Source

The new Swedish standard SS 111116 for assessing the content of nonmetallic inclusions in steel is a manual image analysis method that uses a comparative picture chart for describing the content of inclusions in a microscopic field of view. With the aid of this new picture chart, it is possible to obtain the same results as with optical image analysis regarding basic parameters such as area percent, length and numbers of inclusions per unit area. The frequency distribution of the inclusion sizes can also be obtained. SS 111116 is a tool for inclusion assessment that retains the advantages of both the old comparative methods (ASTM E 45–85 and SEP 1570) and optical image analysis, but reduces the disadvantages to a minimum.
