The Development of an ASTM Standard Analytical Method for the Determination of Oxygen in Steel

Source

Efforts towards the development of a standard procedure for the determination of 5 to 50 ppm of oxygen in steel are described. This work is being carried out by ASTM committee E03 on Chemical Analysis of Metals, in cooperation with committee A-1 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys. Data from three interlaboratory studies that have been carried out over the last six years are compared and improvement in the overall uncertainty of the proposed standard procedure is demonstrated. The various sources contributing to the uncertainty of oxygen measurements, including sample inhomogeneity and sample preparation procedures, are discussed, and suggestions for minimizing uncertainty are given. A short history of progress in Subcommittee E03.01 and suggestions for possible future courses of action are given.
