Variability of Cement Strength in Saudi Arabia

Source

The variability of cement strength depends mainly on the method of test and on the quality control of the cement production. Process changes, particularly in burning and cooling, may significantly alter the crystal structure and the strength development [8]. This study was conducted to determine the variation in cement strength due to variation in the test procedures adopted in Saudi standards as compared with other standards, and to study the variability of cement strength due to quality control of production in the individual company as well as between the eight cement companies of Saudi Arabia. The periodical cement samples from the cement companies were tested for fineness and compressive strength. The test data were analyzed statistically, and this shows the frequencies and sizes of apparent changes in process parameters such as mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation [10]. The quality of cement produced by individual companies is uniform and satisfies the minimum requirements according to Saudi Standard SSA 143/1979 and ASTM Specification for Portland Cement (C 150-85a), although there are different grades of production among the cement companies. The results reported in this study revealed the apparent quality and variability of cement strength in Saudi Arabia.
