Summary of Statistical Analyses of Specification Mortar Cube Test Results from Various Cement Suppliers, Including Four Types of Cement Approved for Corps of Engineers Projects

Within-plant variation in compressive strength was examined for 95 portland cement sources. Levels of variation were found to vary with test age and type of cement. Standard deviations generally increased with age and were generally higher in Type III and Type V cements. The effect of type of sampling on estimates of within-plant standard deviation in compressive strength was examined. Test samples represented by 24-h production composites exhibited measurably less variation than the same cements when represented by grab samples.
