Analysis of Asphalt-Containing Mixtures by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Source

An instrumental method using continuous-wave nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been developed to determine, quickly and accurately, the asphalt content of asphalt-containing mixtures. The resonance signal of the asphalt, which is proportional to the total hydrogen content, through calibration, can be directly related to the asphalt content of asphalt-containing mixtures such as stabilized coating and asphalt-containing products such as saturated felt.

The NMR method has been compared with specific gravity, calcination, and extraction methods. The NMR method has been found to provide the most accurate measurement of stabilizer content and an equivalent measurement of the percent saturation of saturated felt. The typical analysis time is 5 to 15 min.
