Collection and Analysis of Airborne Hexamethylene Diisocyanate by a Modified OSHA Method

A modified Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) method for the determination of 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in air was tested in the laboratory and applied in the analysis of spray paint environments. Field tests included side-by-side comparison of alternative procedures of HDI sampling, along with tests to define the stability of 1-(2-pyridyl) piperazine [1-(2-P)P] impregnated filters, and the effect of increased reagent loading. Since the method employs 1-(2-P)P in excess to form the HDI-urea derivative that is then analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), there is unreacted reagent present in samples. This residual (unreacted) portion causes HPLC interferences, extended analysis time, and deterioration of HPLC columns. To avoid these undesirable characteristics, a means for the removal of “excess” reagent was developed. This paper describes the application of a multi-port valve and short precolumns for facilitating the removal of “excess” reagent and presents data generated by this improved method.
