Evaluation of Latex Modified Concrete Overlays for Cathodic Protection Systems


Cathodic protection systems employing a mixed precious metal oxide coated titanium mesh anode require a cementitious overlay to encapsulate the anode. Several types of overlays have been used including latex modified concrete for five years. Laboratory and field performance have indicated the overlays using a styrene-butadiene rubber latex modifier do not have any adverse operational or performance affects on the cathodic protection system. Acrylic modifiers have been found to cause the formation of anode reaction products. Data are presented on laboratory tests and on completed field projects.
