Headspace Screening/Capillary Column GC/MS Analysis for Volatile Organics: Validation Studies and Applications

Source

The use of a headspace sampling device coupled with a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) equiped with a very large bore capillary column allows the rapid characterization of sample constituents. The MS detector operated in the full scan mode provides adequate sensitivity as well as excellent specificity. Most of the compounds on the volatile target compound list are amenable to analysis using the headspace technique and information on sample constituents not in the analytical standard is available through library searches. The use of the MS as a detector reduces the requirement for chromatographic separation.
