Fundamental Aspects of Load Transfer and Load Sharing

Source

The objective of this review was to examine some of the critical design considerations for porous-surfaced ingrowth prostheses by looking at the fundamental aspects of load transfer and load sharing. It is shown that prostheses of lower stiffness provide higher average bone stress but can have higher stress concentrations in load transfer regions. There are a number of mechanisms for load transfer. Most load transfer, and thus bone hypertrophy, occurs only in localized regions.
