Adhesion of Fiber Metal Coatings


The strength of attachment of fibrous titanium pads to solid Ti-6Al-4V substrates was measured in tension and shear using both static and fatigue strength experiments. The static tensile strength ranged from 29.3 to 65.6 MPa, and the median 2-million-cycle tensile fatigue strength was 18.3 MPa. The static shear strength ranged from 51.7 to 83.2 MPa, and the median 2-million-cycle shear fatigue strength was 13.8 MPa. The tension specimens failed within the bulk of the pad, while the shear test specimens failed at the pad/substrate interface. Increases in either the processing temperature or the pressure applied to the specimen during diffusion bonding were found to increase the strength of the assembly.
