Pesticide Microemulsion Concentrate Formulations Utilizing Fatty Acid Methyl Esters as Solvent Alternatives

Source

In an attempt to investigate solvent alternatives in pesticide microemulsion concentrates, the use of fatty acid methyl esters proved advantageous by providing excellent solubility with a wide variety of pesticide compounds. Various pesticide microemulsion concentrates were prepared utilizing fatty acid methyl esters as alternatives to water immiscible solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Microemulsion concentrates consisting of hydroprene, dicofol, and trifluralin were examined under laboratory conditions with a cross section of typical fatty acid methyl ester chain lengths. Fatty acid methyl esters containing carbon chain lengths of 8–12 provide maximum solubility and emulsification characteristics. Solubility and emulsification decrease with fatty acid carbon chain lengths of 18 or greater. Temperature stability data is provided describing the specific carbon chain length fatty acid methyl ester which enhances solubility in these microemulsion concentrate formulations.
