Problems & Cures in Masonry

Source

Although masonry construction is one of the best types of building methods known to man for cost, durability, beauty, and maintenance, it is subjected to certain problems, on occasion, due to short-comings in design, workmanship, and misuse of materials.

Some of the subjects covered are vari-colored mortar joints, efflorescence, blush (caused by surface coatings), lime deposit (also called lime runs and lime spots), metal wall caps, expansion due to thermal and moisture changes, creep, cleaning, stains, and mortar dry-outs.

All of the problems mentioned here are supported by slides of examples taken from “real” buildings and are coordinated with the material contained in this paper.
