Recommended Test for Slip Resistance on Brick Surfaces

This paper examines current slip resistance test procedures and recommends an appropriate test method for use on brick surfaces. The current ASTM standard for paving brick, ASTM C 902-89a, Standard Specification for Pedestrian and Light Traffic Paving Brick acknowledges the need for considering skid/slip resistance; yet there is not a recommended test procedure to use. Other countries have tests and values for slip resistance on brick surfaces, as well as this country for materials similar to brick. Various test methods that are available for measuring slip resistance are discussed including advantages/disadvantages of each test in regard to brick surfaces. This paper also recommends an action to implement the test into appropriate ASTM standards. This paper addresses slip resistance only.
