Comparison in Rolling Contact Fatigue Life Between Recent Clean Through-Hardening Steels and Carburizing Steels


Rolling contact fatigue lives of through-hardening steels and carburizing steels are getting close if compared with regard to 10% life. However, carburizing steels are more reliable than through-hardening steels because they have longer life with regard to 1% life. In this way, carburizing steels show superiority to through-hardening steels under lubrication conditions less contaminated. However, they lose their superiority when used under contaminated lubrication or high loading conditions. To increase rolling contact fatigue life of carburizing steels, it is effective to increase case depth. By increasing case depth, the life of a carburized bearing increased significantly under clean oil lubrication as well as under contaminated lubrication and high loading conditions.
