Analysis of a Miniature Sandwich Compression Specimen

Source

A finite element method was employed to determine the stress distribution at the ends of the gage sections of a miniature sandwich specimen and a conventional all-composite coupon. The maximum axial stress occurs on the outermost surface at the end of the gage section for both specimen types, with a smaller stress concentration factor for the sandwich specimens. To optimize the geometry of the miniature sandwich specimen with respect to stress concentrations, the influence of parameters such as tab material, thickness, and taper angle was investigated. A stress analysis was conducted to calculate the interlaminar stresses at the specimen free edges using an existing analytical model. These stresses are not large enough to induce interlaminar failure prior to ultimate failure of the specimen. The residual stress in the composite skin is compressive, and experimental data agree fairly well with the analytical results.
