Deformation of Building Sealants Due to Movement During Cure

Source

State-of-the-art testing of chemically cured building sealants movement capabilities is performed after sealants are fully cured. Field experience has shown that either immediate failures or premature sealant failures can and do occur as a result of joint movement during cure and the subsequent deformation of the installed sealant profiles. This paper discusses the effects of temperature cycling, panel size, sealant cure characteristics, joint spacing, building orientation, etc. Also included are suggestions for minimizing the effects of movement during the cure of the sealant.

The paper is nonproprietary and stresses the need for understanding of the problems and the need for development of tests and standard practices by ASTM and our industry associates
