A Survey of the Experimental Determination of Precision in Materials Research

Source

The purpose of this survey was to determine the extent to which the precision of data was determined during the course of experimental studies in materials research. Eight technical journals were sampled.

It was found that 23 ± 13% (at the 95% confidence level) of the papers in the journals examined reported experimentally determined precision. It would appear from these results that an effort should be made to train research personnel in modern experimental procedures.
