Irradiation-Induced Precipitation in Vanadium-Base Alloys Containing Titanium


A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigation has been conducted on V-Ti, V-Ti-Cr, and V-Ti-Si alloys after neutron-irradiation at 420 and 600°C to fluences up to 114 dpa in the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF). Two types of irradiation-induced precipitates were identified, i.e., Ti2O and Ti5Si3, in addition to blocky Ti(O,N,C) that formed by thermal processes during ingot fabrication. Characteristics of the irradiation-induced precipitation were correlated with the swelling and mechanical properties of the irradiated alloys. In specimens where Ti5Si3 precipitation was significant, swelling was negligible. In specimens where Ti2O and Ti5Si3 precipitation was significant, ductility was relatively low.
