Progress with International Standards for the Acquisition and Presentation of Data on Plastics for Computerized Databases

Source

In recent years, there have been initiatives in France, Germany and the United Kingdom to develop standard procedures for the acquisition and presentation of comparable data on plastics. In 1988, a Working Group first met in ISO TC61 to consider the preparation of International Standards. In order to progress the work as rapidly as feasible in ISO and to harmonise opinions in different countries, a technical advisory committee has been formed consisting of representatives from France, Germany and the UK. The first phase of the work was concerned with data comprising single-point values for the limited range of properties commonly included in data sheets. Subsequently, the development of standards has been considered for the measurement and presentation of Multipoint data for which a more substantial quantity of information is involved. These standards will identify sets of property data for plastics which should facilitate the comparison of materials from different suppliers and their selection for a range of applications. The standards specify all the metadata associated with each measurement value and should thereby also assist the storage of the data in computerised databases.
