Effect of Limestone Additions Upon Drying Shrinkage of Portland Cement Mortar

Source

This paper describes the adverse effect of limestone additions upon drying shrinkage of Portland cement mortar. Two tests, ASTM Test Method for Drying Shrinkage of Mortar Containing Portland Cement (C 596) and California Department of Transportation Method of Test for Expansion in Water and Contraction in Air of Portland Cement Mortar (Method 527), were performed on several cements with additions of interground or blended limestone. The data indicate that the addition of 2 to 5% limestone in Type I or Type II cement can significantly increase the 4-day drying shrinkage as measured by the two methods. The cement manufacturer would have to consider other changes to the cement to offset the increase in drying shrinkage.
