Propagation of Surface Cracks in Notched and Unnotched Rods

Source

Stress-intensity factors for surface cracks in cylindrical bars have been calculated applying the method of weight functions. The weight function was obtained from the crack opening displacement of a reference load using the finite-element method. The results can be used for the prediction of growth rates and the shapes of the developing crack front for cracks in notched and unnotched cylindrical bars under arbitrary loading conditions. The predictions have been compared with experimental results.
